Unexpected Thumbnail Behavior in SharePoint News Pages

Hello everyone,

I'm encountering an issue with SharePoint News where the thumbnail image is not behaving as expected.

When I manually select a thumbnail image for a news post, it appears correctly at first. However, as soon as I click the "Edit" button to modify the post, SharePoint automatically replaces the thumbnail with the first image found in the body of the article—without any action or confirmation from me.

This behavior is problematic because it overrides the intended visual identity of the post and creates inconsistency in how content is presented across our site. The selected thumbnail should remain unchanged unless explicitly updated by the user.

Has anyone else experienced this issue? Is there a known workaround or setting that can prevent SharePoint from auto-updating the thumbnail on edit?

Thanks in advance for your help!

Best regards,
Airton

I raised a ticket with Microsoft support regarding this and it looks like it might have been resolved now. Could you see if you are still getting the same issue?

We have noticed the same issue in our tenant. When you click edit and then immediately click page details, you can initially see the thumbnail you set, but then after a few seconds it changes back to the thumbnail used in the page banner (or in the case of a page with a plan header, a placeholder image).

    Hi Airton,

We’ve noticed the exact same issue recently and it’s been quite frustrating. When you click Edit on a news post or a template, SharePoint now automatically replaces the thumbnail with the header image. This behaviour didn’t happen before, previously, you could have different images for the header and thumbnail without any problem.

Unfortunately, this automatic override links the thumbnail directly to the header image. Since the banner (header) and thumbnail have different aspect ratios and sizing, this causes thumbnails to appear incorrectly or even show as blank when shared via email or displayed in news web parts.

I’ve tried several workarounds, including those suggested by AI, but so far none have fully resolved the issue.

AI mentioned you can automate the thumbnail reset using Power Automate. I have not tried this yet - also feel it might be a longshot.

Thanks for raising this, it’s good to know we’re not alone in experiencing it. Hopefully fixed soon

    Best regards,
