Surface Hub admins will need to acquire Teams Rooms licenses for Hub device. The requirement follows the announcement last September of new Teams Rooms Pro and Basic licenses, including changes to user subscription licenses for Teams Rooms deployments.

UPDATE (June 20, 2023): You will receive a 90-day grace period through September 30, 2023. Any Teams Rooms device using a user license will be blocked from logging into their account until a valid Teams Rooms license is applied once the grace period expires. Depending on the device type, this could disrupt your Teams Rooms experience, including the ability to join meetings or make calls. For more information about these changes, continue reading and refer to the Teams Room blog here

The upshot for Surface Hub: If you still rely on user subscription licenses for the Hub Device account, you have until July 1 to procure and provision a Teams Rooms license.  Otherwise, your Surface Hub will be blocked from signing in until a Teams Rooms license is assigned. The new licensing requirement does not affect users signing in to Surface Hub to access Microsoft 365 accounts or personal files.

This change was communicated via in-product messaging and on the Microsoft Teams Rooms licenses page to ensure our customers ample time to prepare for this transition. To learn more, see Staying compliant: Get ready for Microsoft Teams Rooms Licensing Policy Enforcement.

Can anyone confirm if the surface hub needs room basic or only works with roo pro?

  • A Teams Rooms Pro license is all that's needed for a Surface Hub device account. In fact, after September 30th, 2023 user (E3/E5) licenses can no longer be used for Teams sign-in on Teams Rooms Devices.

After assigning a Teams Rooms Pro license confirm you can sign into teams.microsoft.com with the account. If you are still unable to add it to the Surface Hub, check the Azure sign-in logs to confirm MFA isn't enabled and see if sign-in is being blocked by an incompatible Conditional Access policy

So I have a question regarding the teams pro license.. Is this and Add-on to the accounts we normally use for device accounts that already have regular mail and calendar access?

We have been unable to setup our surface hub S2 devices, because once the teams Pro license has been added we removed the regular E3/E5 license. Can you expand on what needs to be done?
